History

The Sinai Peninsula is home to a collection of ancient Egyptian monuments, such as the Serabit el-Khadim temple in the heart of Sinai, which the ancient Egyptians called “the Land of Turquoise.” Sharm el-Sheikh, however, has a relatively recent history compared to other ancient Egyptian cities.

Until the 1960s, Sharm el-Sheikh was a small fishing village on the Sinai Peninsula, and it began to develop strategically in the mid-20th century.

During the Six-Day War of 1967, the Israelis occupied the Sinai Peninsula, which had gained military importance. However, in the Six-Hour War of 1973, the Egyptians reclaimed a portion of their land from the occupiers.

Following the Camp David Accords of 1978 and the Peace Agreement of 1979, the rest of Sinai was returned to Egyptian control on April 25, 1982, opening the way for tourism. Since the 1980s, Sharm El Sheikh has grown rapidly into a world-class tourist destination, renowned for its coral reefs, luxury hotels, and international conference venues, blending natural beauty with modern development.

Today, Sharm El Sheikh is known for its well-developed infrastructure, luxury resorts, and vibrant tourism industry. It also plays a significant diplomatic role, frequently hosting international conferences and peace negotiations.
